Recently, the Congressional Accountability Office of Compliance released statistics that indicate falls are the private industry’s third leading cause of workplace fatalities. Nearly 600 workers die from a fatal slips, trips, or falls, annually.
Shiftwork and shiftworkers are necessary and instrumental in keeping so many vital operations going 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This could mean working nights or alternating days, nights and afternoons, or other irregular shifts.
We all know that illegal drugs such as marijuana or cocaine are hazardous to use. We also know that alcohol is prohibited at work because it is, obviously, intoxicating. But did you know that many other drugs that we take for granted can also affect your ability to do your job safely?
Companies and safety managers can combat substance abuse in the workplace with an Employee Assistance Program targeting both alcohol and drug dependency on the job.
Workplace stress then is the harmful physical and emotional responses that can happen when there is a conflict between job demands on the employee and the amount of control an employee has over meeting these demands.
It’s important for employers to be aware of the dangers that excessive heat exposure has on employees.
Workers suffering from fatigue—physical and mental—are not only less productive and more prone to illness but also more distracted and thus more likely to be involved in a safety incident.
