Untrained Worker Dies of Head Injury

A new untrained worker died of a head injury after he was hit by a falling tree. He was standing at the rear of a skidder being used in a logging operation at the time of the incident.

He had been part of the three-person crew for about three weeks, and was helping out where needed at various tasks. The tree faller and skidder operator were experienced. It had been agreed by crew members the skidder operator should stay away from the area where the trees were being cut down. However, no discussion of safe work procedures or the hazards had taken place before the work started.

The victim’s hardhat was knocked off by the tree branches. He received fatal head injuries.

Unfortunately, the new worker is often the victim of workplace tragedies. Without safety training and guidance, the new hire can end up in dangerous situations without even knowing it. New employees and experienced workers both require ongoing safety training in any type of workplace. This training should include safety procedures and how to use safety equipment such as hardhats.
