NYPD: 11 kids injured as school bus flips onto side in Staten Island crash
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A total of 14 individuals, including 11 children, were injured when a yellow school bus overturned in a crash in Dongan Hills Friday morning, according to authorities.
The patients suffered minor injuries and were in stable condition at Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, according to preliminary information supplied to a spokesman for the NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
“The safety of our students is our number one priority – and we are thankful that no serious injuries were initially reported,“ said Jenna Lyle, a spokeswoman for the city Department of Education. ”NYPD, EMS, and FDNY responded to this morning’s incident.”
The FDNY and the NYPD responded to the crash, which was reported at 7:58 a.m. at Laconia and Naughton avenues.
The crash occurred when the driver of a white Lexus sedan allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection, according to the police spokesman.
The sedan allegedly struck the bus, causing it to overturn, the police spokesman said.
The bus was occupied by 13 people, including two adults and 11 children. EMS responded to the location and transported the 13 occupants in the bus and the driver of the Lexus to the hospital.
No charges have been filed and the investigation continues, police said.
The Lexus had extensive damage on its front end and the airbags were deployed.
Several hours after the crash, authorities had both Laconia and Mason blocked off to traffic.
